Asbestos Help
Asbestos can be found in a huge variety of building materials.
Asbestos Cement is the most extensively used form of asbestos. It is commonly found on garage and shed roofs, soffits and guttering. It is unlikely to release high levels of fibres, therefore it can usually be removed safely as long as simple precautions are taken. It usually contains 10-25% of white asbestos.
Asbestos Insulation Board is used as fire protection in ducts, soffits, partitions and ceiling panels. It is a softer material, the fibres becoming airborne more easily than those in cement. It usually contains approximately 30% brown asbestos.
Asbestos Lagging is found mainly in the thermal insulation of pipes and boilers and can contain up to 85% asbestos - a mixture of fibres including blue and brown asbestos.
Typical locations where asbestos containing materials may be present are as follows:
- Within wall cavities
- Beneath concrete floors
- Floor tiles and linoleum
- Behind plasterboard and plaster
- Lagging on boilers and pipe work
- Roofing
- Vertical Cladding
- Beneath wooden floors
- Inside fire doors
- Inside sealed heaters
- Interior walls and panels
- Gasket and rope seals
- Gutters and Down pipes
- Water Tanks
- Some paper products
- Fire blankets
- Brake linings
- Textured coatings (artex)
- Older domestic appliances such as cookers, washing machines and ironing boards
- Some older hair salon haidryers
If the material is in poor condition, damaged or is likely to be disturbed in the future it should be removed by a health and safety executive approved contractor. If asbestos is found and it is in good condition it can either be removed or left in place and encapsulated and monitored at regular intervals.
